The Fm chord is made up of the notes Ab, C, and F. As seen on the fingering diagram on the left, the 1st string played on the 3rd fret makes a 2nd C note. Because of this, some ukulele players will play the chord with the 3rd string dampened. Technically, this still creates an Fm chord. But allowing the 3rd string to play adds a depth of tone that is worth the effort.
Every chord has its own characteristic or personality. In his 1784 essay “A History of Key Characteristics in the 18th and Early 19th Centuries,” composer Christian Schuber wrote about the quality of different chords. Of the F minor chord he wrote, “Deep depression, funereal lament, groans of misery and longing for the grave.” Ok, so that’s kind of heavy.
Many popular songs were composed in F minor, including “Dream On” by Aerosmith, “I Put a Spell on You” by Screaming Jay Hawkins, and “Summer Winds” by Frank Sinatra.

Self-taught musicians tend to form bad habits and techniques that prove difficult to break or can actually impede their growth as a musician.
