Every chord has its own characteristic or personality. In his 1784 essay “A History of Key Characteristics in the 18th and Early 19th Centuries,” composer Christian Schuber wrote about the quality of different chords. Of the D minor chord he wrote, “Melancholy womanliness, the spleen and humours brood”. (Ok, so remember this was written in 1784). Other composers have written that the D minor chord evokes a sense of melancholy and contemplation. Like other minor chords, D minor can create a heavy, serious atmosphere.

Despite the melancholy mood this chord may create, many popular songs were composed in the key of Dm, including “Bad” by Michael Jackson, “Money for Nothing” by Dire Straits, and “Poison” by Alice Cooper.
